Lee and Trinh recommended a great peking duck restaurant: Old Kingdom on Smith St. They had a great experience there a month ago, and wanted to share the experience. Trinh booked a table for 10 and off we went this week.
The majority of us were having duck, but Jenny wanted something else. The waiter who took Jenny's order kept asking her what she was after. The menu stated Singapore noodles with vegetables, with the option of changing the noodles - please ask the waiter. Jenny wanted it with skinny egg noodles, and repeated it to him several times, with him clarifying and asking her for minutes on end exactly what she was after. Winnii also ordered some asparagus soup at the same time.
The duck came quickly, which we all hacked into, except for Jenny, who waited for her food. While she waiting for her duck, we asked for some more cucumber, to which they said they charged $3 a plate for 12 pieces of cucumber about 3cm long x 0.5cm thick x 0.5cm high. I almost gagged when told of the price. We should have BYO cucumber.
Forty minutes after this slip, a waiter came out with Jenny's food, only it wasn't her food. They had made Singapore noodles. She quickly told him that it was wrong. He retreated, with another waiter coming out to confirm her order, before retreating as well. The chef then came out to see exactly what she wanted, before off she went. We also let them know Winnii was still waiting for her asparagus soup.
Jenny's meal finally came out about twenty minutes later, and they had made it correctly. But poor Winnii was still waiting for her soup. We asked again what was happening with her soup - she had been waiting for about an hour. A waiter came out to tell us her soup would be ready in two to three minutes. Alright, sure, at least it had been acknowledged. We were beginning to wonder what that waiter had written down when he took their order. Obviously, not much 'coz everything he wrote down had turned out wrong.
Punchline: Twenty minutes later, the original waiter who took the order (who was having a terrible evening) came out, and said, "I'm sorry, your asparagus soup.. It is unavailable. There is no asparagus soup tonight."
No asparagus soup? It took them over an hour to let us know there was no asparagus soup. Jenny went nuts, and was so loud that people on other tables turned their heads to see why she was yelling.
Needless to say, we did speak to the manager as we paid our bill, and he was very good about it. He said that if (note the "if") we were willing to come back, we'd get a free duck.
My God. And I thought our experience at 3 Station Pier on Chinese New Year was bad..
Keep up the good work.
