Garry was made redundant yesterday. Shona flew up and John K gave him the news. She had organised an appointment with him last week, and didn't tell him what it was about. She said that Guiseppe gave her the order the night before, and she was upset she had no say in it. Garry thinks otherwise, because the meeting had been scheduled for a week. Either way, I watched as he gathered up his things, and was walked out the door 20 minutes later.
I personally think it was Shona who let him go, seeing as she's his manager now, and she had always said she never liked him. Maybe G instructed her one of her team needed to go, so she chose Garry over the rest.
What makes no sense is that his role was made redundant - meaning they can't hire a replacement because they're arguing he was surplus to requirements. I told Terry about it, and he was disgusted. Garry wasn't slacking off - he was busy, and he was always busy. They just don't see it in Melbourne, and it pisses me off that they think he had no work, when watching him, I could see how stressed out he was. What's even more upsetting is seeing Garry let go, but 7m away from him, Phil's job is still safe; for now. The slacker of a man who doesn't work still has a job. But word has it there will be more redundancies and restructures soon.
He's not in a good state. It wasn't the best of timing either, with everything going on in his life with the wife etc. He doesn't know what to do now. I told him to call on his contacts - I know Chris was hiring as recently as a week ago, so I told him to get in touch with him. What pisses him off even more was that Schenker tried to poach him two weeks ago, and he knocked back the offer, wanting to stick it out with us.
Something is going on, and I'm not sure what the direction is. There's word that the DE's will fall into Shona's umbrella. I asked her about it, and she said that my role will probably sit within the operation, and not her management. It's still being worked out, but there is a possibility that I will be under Shona's team. Garry told me that in a recent team meeting, Shona gave me glowing praise, and said she still thought I was the best LE/DE in the company, so I know she would love to have me working under her. I don't mind reporting to either Shona or Greg, so it's just a technicality.
The next twelve months will prove to be somewhat interesting. Seeing so many people being let go, or made redundant recently has made me wonder whether my job is ok. I don't want to be a LE again though, so we'll see.
Back to Garry's situation though - I'm wondering whether I should have perhaps warned him. I had no idea Shona was going to let him go though, just my intuition.
