The happenings

I caught up with Winnii, Jen and Niks the other night over dinner down in Keysborough. It's funny. Now that I'm a Sydneysider, everyone in Sydney talks about how close they live to the city. I always hear things like, 'I only live 5kms from the city', which, in Melbourne, you don't really say, but you know it's close to the city. But in Sydney, the distance, although everyone talks about it, is quite irrelevant, because traffic is just congested in general. Five kilometers from the city means nothing to me, because frankly, it could take anywhere from 10 to 35 minutes to get to the city.

So, think about that for a moment. I think Newtown to Botany is about 8 kms between each other, and it takes 30 minutes to get travel in between the two suburbs in Sydney. So now compare this to Melbourne. I love Melbourne traffic. The other day, to get to Nikki's place, I travelled 60kms to get from Albion to Maribyrnong to Brunswick St to Keysborough in just a little over one hour. Seriously. I'm not going to complain about Melbourne traffic again.

It was good to see Nikki though. I didn't think I'd be able to catch up with her before I left for Sydney, so it was a nice surprise when we managed to catch up. Went to Michelangelo's - a little restaurant nearby, and Jen and Pooh managed to make it as well. It was good to see the girls. As I said to Jen and Pooh on the way home, 'I've seen Niks three times in three months. I'm on a roll!' Hehehe.

It's been nice to be in Melbourne, and seeing the girls again. This is what I love about Christmas and New Year - I actually get to spend time with the girls. I saw Pooh and Jen 3-4 times in the space of a week. Seriously. I even saw Kad, and Lee.

I got the word this morning - Lee gave birth to Christian early this morning; 2:03am to be exact. She's now the mother of five kids at the age of 30. I'm not sure whether I'll have time to visit her tonight; I might have to wait til Chinese New Year to see little Christian.

It was little things like this that I know I'll miss about Melbourne. I'll actually know how Kad and Phuongy feel now, missing out on stuff like this, catch ups like the other night.

But it might be a good thing, because I know it'll force me to be more vigilent in keeping contact with them. Like, having a conversation with Winnii when we're both travelling in the car, in between offices/shops. Phone calls first thing in the morning with Winnii, sometimes with Jen too. And, when I'm down in Melbourne, I'll see them more.

The other night we brought up some past moments, and wow, events and memories I haven't thought about in years. Like, when Nikki broke up with Tan, and the first person she called from a public telephone with her clothes in garbage bags was Kad, who lived in Hong Kong at the time. And we picked her up from the street. Memories. I've known them for so long now. Long time.
