I move into my apartment tonight, officially. My bed arrives tomorrow. Thank goodness. I can't wait to sleep in my own bed. It's been close to three months of travelling back and forth. How time flies, right?
I'm settling into Sydney well enough now. My body clock is still crazy, and my sleep patterns have been pretty bad, but I'm not going to complain.
A strange incident happened last week. Jackie, Nancy and I went out to karoake in the city. As we were walking down George St, Nancy bumped into someone she knew. She was chatting away with this person while Jackie and I stood around, waiting for her to finish.
Then, all of a sudden, I hear:
Nancy: Huh? Do you know Thuy?
Other girl: Umm.. Yea...
Nancy: How do you know Thuy? You can't know Thuy - she's just moved from Melbourne
I finally look at the other girl when I heard my name being mentioned, and I studied her face for a bit before I recognised her. It was Gigi, Andy's fiance who I had met just before Christmas.
I told Winnii and Jenny the story on the weekend when the girls had a catch up in Melbourne, and they couldn't believe it. I know about five people in Sydney outside of work, and two of them happen to know each other, through completely different means. It just reaffirms what a small world this is.
I've been pretty busy in Sydney that I haven't had a good solid block of time to write. Even now, these are just words, and not really well written, either.
I must say though, that I'm really really glad to have met Nancy and Jackie. I think the three of us will end up being pretty tight. Nancy is hilarious - she is so much fun to hang out with, and although I don't know her that well, I already feel like I'm close to her. Same with Jackie. I have a lot of fun with them, and I think we have a pretty good dynamic between the three of us.
Nancy flies out to Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia on Monday; Jackie to Hong Kong on Tuesday, and myself to Melbourne on Wednesday. I'm the first to return the following Monday. It's going to be strange being in Sydney without either of them around, to be honest. Especially Jackie. But especially Nancy. But especially Jackie.
The past few weeks I've been in contact with the both of them almost constantly, so it's going to feel strange that we'll have to cut connections for about a week or two.
I'm really glad I met them. They're really good people. They've helped me keep busy. The apartment and buying stuff has kept me busy as well. Andy and Viv have also kept me busy. I know that I will always remember these early days of Sydney. The weather, the city, Potts Point, Darlinghurst, Hurstville, Randwick, Christmas, New Years, Australia Day, the sleepless nights. All of it.
I must say, I'm loving it. I really am.
Completely off topic - the week before I managed to lock myself out of my apartment. This morning, my room swipe key failed on me when I went from the parking lot to my room. But! I did learn my lesson from last time around, because this time, at least I had my phone on me. So I could at least call the duty manager. I still had to wait half an hour for reception to open. What kind of hotel doesn't open reception at 8am? Ah well. It's all good now.
