The power of paradigms

It's been a long week. I want to go home and crash again.

Earlier this week, at boot camp... Well, training, really.. I heard two interesting stories of the 20th century.

The first: a guy meets with Kodak to try and sell his new invention, a somewhat basic box that was able to copy some dark letters. Kodak rejected the idea, and sent the man packing. It turned out that this guy had invented the photocopier! Can you imagine what the world would be like now if every photocopier had Kodak on it?

The second story: The Swiss were masters of making watches for over 100 years. One day, one of their lab team came up with a new idea: a watch that ran on batteries, had no springs, and was not as complex. The idea was rejected, and so confident were the Swiss in their watch making ability that they didn't even protect the idea. At a convention later that year, the Japanese went past the stand, took a look at the watch, and seized on it. Within 10 years, the Swiss went from having more than 65% of the market share down to less than 10% with the invention of the quartz movement watch.

Amazing, isn't it?

The power of your paradigms can have such a huge impact on your behaviour. Powerful stuff.
